Methodology

Not a maturity model.

A mirror. NORTH does not measure how far you have come. It measures how you read what is in front of you — and how that reading differs from the person sitting beside you.

The philosophy

Three principles. One system.

01

No individual ranking

The Coalition Map does not name the weakest link. It names where the room collectively reads the organisation — and where the gaps in that reading sit.

02

Honesty as the path of least resistance

Choices are shuffled. The Reckoning scenarios cannot be prepared for — they are assembled from your own accumulated signal. You cannot game what you cannot predict.

03

The Brief refuses half-pictures

Strategic advice from half the picture produces interventions the build team cannot execute. The Brief will not generate until both halves are present.

Signal · 01

Eight archetypes. One reading of who you are.

Your archetype is not a label. It is a description of the pattern your choices form under pressure. Every archetype carries a gift and a shadow. NORTH names both.

Trust-first
Strategic Navigator
reads first

Moves the room before moving the work. Frames decisions so other leaders feel the trade. Patience for navigation can become tolerance for delay.

Compresses timelines other leaders defend. Sets the pace the organisation follows. The risk: moving before the room is ready.

The dimensions

Five lenses. One score is not the point.

NORTH does not produce a single number. It produces a pattern across five dimensions. The pattern — not the score — is what the Coalition Map reads.

RISK
Risk posture
High read

You move toward uncertainty with structure. You build contingency into the plan.

Low read

You avoid commitment until the picture is clearer. You prefer reversible decisions.

VEL
Velocity
High read

You compress timelines. You ship before the room is ready. Speed is your strategy.

Low read

You build consensus before commitment. You prefer the slower, surer path.

LEAD
Leadership pull
High read

You create alignment before action. The room follows your framing.

Low read

You lead by doing, not by telling. Your influence is quiet but persistent.

ACCT
Accountability
High read

You name the owner before the initiative. Accountability is infrastructure.

Low read

You share ownership broadly. You prefer collective commitment to individual blame.

GOV
Governance read
High read

You see governance as enabling, not constraining. You map compliance to advantage.

Low read

You experience governance as friction. You prefer to build first, check later.

Readiness bands

Four bands. Not a ladder.

The bands are not ranks. They are descriptions of where the team's collective reading sits. A team can be Established in one dimension and Nascent in another. That is the point.

0–35
Nascent

The team is aware of the need but has not yet aligned on what readiness means for their context. Pilots are running, but no structured programme exists.

36–55
Emerging

A programme exists, but the gap between leadership intention and execution reality is visible. The team can name the blockers but has not yet removed them.

56–75
Moderate

The team is moving. Decisions are being made with awareness of consequence. The gap between functions is narrowing, but not closed.

76–100
Established

The team reads the organisation consistently. Governance is enabling, not constraining. The programme is scaling with confidence.

The outputs

Three maps. One brief.

01
Coalition Map

Where the leadership team agrees, where it diverges, and who reads the organisation differently from the median. The map is directional — it shows pattern, not score.

Requires: 3+ Strategic completions
02
Tension Map

The technical constraint silently blocking every project, and the dimension where the team is most divided. The shared wall is named, not numbered.

Requires: 3+ Build completions
03
Strategist Brief

The brief that refuses to generate on half a picture. Executive summary. Political risk. Sequenced actions. Partner-ready. Only when both maps are present.

Requires: Both maps unlocked
One system

Different instruments. One truth.

NORTH is not a single test with many outputs. It is three instruments that read the same organisation through different lenses. Each lens needs its own resolution.

01
SIGNAL
8 archetypes

Measures individual leadership under pressure. The decision space is personal and multidimensional, so the taxonomy needs enough granularity to avoid a horoscope. Eight patterns capture how a leader actually reads risk, velocity, accountability, and governance when the stakes are real.

02
NORTH Strategic
4 lenses + 4 bands

Measures where the leadership team collectively stands and where it agrees. The output is not an identity — it is a reading frame. The four lenses (People, Process, Data, Governance) show where the organisation is looking, and the readiness bands show how clearly it sees.

03
NORTH Build
4 archetypes

Measures what will actually stop an AI initiative. Execution constraints collapse into a smaller structural grammar: velocity, governance, resilience, and dependency. Four archetypes keep the output actionable for the engineers, CISOs, and cloud teams who must run it.

How the Strategist Brief unifies them

The Brief refuses to generate on half a picture. Three Strategic completions produce the Coalition Map — who is in the room and how they lead. Three Build completions produce the Tension Map — what will stop them. Only when both maps are present does the Strategist Brief synthesise leadership picture and execution constraint into one advisory output and a 30-day sprint plan. A brief built on leadership alone recommends interventions the build team cannot execute. A brief built on execution alone surfaces blockers without identifying who has the authority to address them. Either half, presented as the whole, is accurate in the narrow and wrong in the consequential.
